As expected, the Blue Jays signed Dominican SS Manuel Beltre as the 2020 international free agent signing period opened today after a six month delay.
Beltre, considered one of the more advanced bats in the class, signed for a reported $2.4 million bonus. He’s the 10th ranked IFA according to Baseball America. Beltre may not have the tools of some of the higher ranked players in his class, but he has the most polish, makes consistent contact, and shows gap power. Having played in a number of stateside showcase events, Beltre’s English is already passable. He shows high baseball IQ and skills in game situations. There’s every reason to believe a player of his profile stays at short.
Venezuelan SS Martin Gimenez, on the other hand, is projected to move off of the position. At 6’3”/160, he has room for plenty of physical growth, and his strong arm might forecast a move to 3rd or a corner outfield spot.
The Blue Jays also added three players they were widely expected to sign: Venezuelan SS Luis Garcia and his countryman OF Yhoangel Aponte, and Dominican C Jonathan Peguero.
Toronto also added Dominican OF Yeuni Munoz, for a $300K bonus, as well as a pair of Cubans:
We hope to have more on these players in the coming weeks.
